John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States,
was born in the North Precinct of Braintree, now Quincy on July 11,1767, the oldest son of John Adams, the second President.

Like his father, his life was one of long and distinguished public service. His career began early as a young man assisting his father on several diplomatic missions to Europe at the time of the American Revolution. As a young man he served as U.S. Minister to Holland and Prussia. After a term as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, he served as U.S. Minister to Russia. On December 24, 1814, he signed on behalf of the United States the Treaty of Ghent, which concluded the War of 1812, and then served as U.S. Minister to Great Britain, as had his father following the American Revolution. John Quincy Adams was Secretary of State under President Monroe and played a key role in the acquisition of Florida and the promulgation of the Monroe Doctrine. After his term as President, 1825 - 1829, he served for sixteen years in the House of Representatives, where he died in the service he loved in 1848
